SC Golf Cart Law: What South Carolina Drivers Need to Know in 2025
A new SC golf cart law took effect in July 2025 that changes the way these popular recreational vehicles are used across the state. The legislation gives cities and towns full authority to regulate golf cart operation — and adds a critical safety rule for kids.
🛑 Children Must Wear Seat Belts Under New SC Golf Cart Law
Under the updated state law, children under 12 years old must wear seat belts while riding on golf carts, regardless of whether you’re on the beach, in a neighborhood, or downtown. This change comes after years of injuries and even fatalities involving unrestrained young riders.
Senator Brad Hutto, who has seen the tragic aftermath of golf cart accidents in his legal practice, championed the child safety provision. Another supporter, Senator Ronnie Cromer, even installed seat belts on his family’s custom golf cart.
🌙 Night Driving, Distance Rules, and Local Power
The 2025 changes also allow golf carts with lights to be driven at night — but only if the local government allows it. Municipalities can now:
-
Set hours of operation
-
Define legal zones and street access
-
Enforce additional restrictions or bans
Previously, golf carts were only allowed within a 4-mile radius of their registration address and only during daylight. Now, unless a local ordinance says otherwise, the 4-mile rule still applies by default.
🏛️ Local Governments Are Now in Control
According to Sen. Greg Hembree, this new law removes the “patchwork quilt” of inconsistent rules and gives each community the ability to govern based on its unique safety needs. That means your town might still limit golf cart use — or allow more freedom than before. It’s essential to check with your city’s local ordinance page or stop by your town hall.
